چکیده
The cockroach reacts to an air puff applied to its cerci by a forward escape reflex which decreases or even disappears after a few successive stimuli have been applied (Roeder, 1948). In the preceding paper (Zilber-Gachelin & Chartier, 1973) we have shown that the response is already modified by habituating effects at the first synaptic relay, in the 6th abdominal ganglion (A.G.). The present paper extends this work and studies the effect of the second synaptic relay, the 3rd thoracic ganglion (T.G.), on the abdominal cord to motor nerve transmission. In the final section we study how these properties, combined with those we described in the 6th A.G., can explain the modification of the motor response observed on the isolated reflex loop when repetitive cereal air puffs are delivered. Finally, the bearing of these results on the behaviour of the whole free cockroach is discussed. A brief report of this work has appeared previously (Chartier & Zilber-Gachelin, 1969).

Modification of the motor reflex responses due to repetition of the peripheral stimulus in the cockroach. I. Habituation at the level of an isolated abdominal ganglion.
INTRODUCTION All living organisms react to modifications of the external environment in their own generally quite precise manner, the best known example being the reflex reactions of animals to a given stimulus. If the stimulus is repeated, however, the reflex generally undergoes a change which allows the animal to adapt itself to the new environmental conditions. This change can be manifested ...
متن کاملTHE ROLE OF NON-ADRENERGIC NON-CHOLINERGIC SYSTEM IN THE PERISTALTIC REFLEX OF GUINE A PIG ILEUM
The effect of some endogenous components -endogenous opiates, cholecystokinin (CCK), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and somatostatin-as inhibitory or excitatory transmitters in the local nervous pathways involved in peristaltic responses was examined. The peristaltic reflex was studied using a modification of the Trendelenberg preparation. In each preparation, the luminal distens...
متن کاملA comparative study on soleus H reflex parameters using vertebral column and peripheral nerve stimulation
Although low-threshold transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a modality used for control of pain, but its effect in the control of spasticity and change of excitability of a motor neuron is controversial. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of 15-min tripolar TENS of vertebral column and bipolar TENS of common peroneal nerve (300 µs width, 50 Hz) on synap...

The changes that occur in all of the motor unit recruitment following the central and peripheral lesions of motor nerves can be effective on individual's disability. Following the low back pain (L.B.P) with any known cause, the effective role of muscles in providing postural or dynamic stability will be reduced. Today in rehabilitation of these patients, except of medical treatment for reductio...
متن کاملReliability of Motor Evoked Potentials Induced by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: The Effects of Initial Motor Evoked Potentials Removal
Introduction: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a useful tool for assessment of corticospinal excitability (CSE) changes in both healthy individuals and patients with brain disorders. The usefulness of TMS-elicited motor evoked potentials (MEPs) for the assessment of CSE in a clinical context depends on their intra-and inter-session reliability. This study aimed to evaluate if removal ...
